ometimes, things work out better than you hope. Take the book-
casefeatr.ued in this issue for example. From the start, we were
looking for a simple design that would take a minimal amount of
materials to build. Built from less than two sheets of pl;'wood, this
project fits the bill. But we ended up with much more than that. Sure,
the bookcase looks great by itseJI and can hold a lot of stuff. One
other benefit of this design is you can tlaruforrn this classic book-
caseinto a whole wall full of storage by connecting several book-
casestogether, like you seeon the cover.
Projects like this are just one of the reasons why I really enjoy
being a woodworker and sharing the results with you.

In my smallbasementshop,there
just isn't enough room for a per-
manent outfeed table for my
cabinetsaw.lneeded a table
that I could set up and take
down quickly, but was still
strongandsturdy.
I found the solutionwhile
roaming around in my local
home rmprovement center -
the folding shelf brackets you
seein the photo at left.
As the drawings
below show,lattached
the vertical arms of the
bracketsonto mounting plates
sothe tabletop would clearthe
saw's fence rail when it was in
eitherthe up or down positions.I
did the same thing with the hori-
zontal arms to raisethe outfeed
table levelwith my saw table.To
keep the table flat and to add

swings into action when it's
neededand safelytucksout of
thewaywhenit'snot.

To solvethis problem, I decidedto fill
the sectionsunderneaththe table with
wood inserts (see Figure1).I cut out the
inserts to fit snugly between the ribs.
Beforemountingthe insertsto the1able,I
alsocut slotsand clampingholesin the
insertsto matchthoseslotsand holesin
the work table-That way I can havefull
useof thetablewithout havingto remove
the inserts.Flexiblesiliconeadhesive
holdsthe blocksin place.
Now, lcan clamp large workpieces
firmly. and I don't have to worry about

When installinga butt hingein a mortise,
I find it difficultto drill pilot holesfor the
mounting screwsaccurately.
I eitherdrill
the holesa little off center,or they'renot
squareto the workpiece,Icameup with a
way thatallowsmeto drillthe holes accu-
ratelyand quickly as well.
First, I make a 1/2'Lthick harowooo
guide blockthe exactwidth of the hinge.
Then I drill holes in the blockthat arethe
same diameteras the pilot holesfor the
hinge screws,and I make sure they line
up with the hingeholes.
Now, all I have to do is put the blockin
the hinge mortiseand drill pilot holes
with the block guiding the bit.
