INSTRUCTIONS:
Mark the Guidelines
Prepare the mari and mark for a simple 8 division, using Candlelight Metallic Yellow
#028 (YLI Corp) for the vertical guidelines (Figures 1 and 2). Leave marking pins
around the equator but do not mark the equator.

2. Measure and Pin for Additional Guidelines
Complete the following steps:
Step 1
Divide the circumference by 4 to find the
distance from the poles to the equator
(Ex. 24.75cm Ô 4 = 6.19cm)
Step 2
Divide the measurement
found in Step 1 by 5.
(Ex. 6.19cm Ô 5 = 1.24cm)
Step 3
Using the distance found in Step 2, multiply by 2.
Place pins this distance from both sides of the equator.
(Ex. 1.24cm X 2 = 1.48cm)

3. Stitch Additional Guidelines
Using the same thread that was used in the simple 8 division, mark the
remaining guidelines; entering at A1, making the next stitch at A2 and so on,
ending at A5 to complete Round A (Figure 3). Complete Round B the same way,
starting at B1 and finishing at B5. Do the same for Round C and Round D.
Note: Round A and C will intersect each other at the equator and Round B and D
will intersect each other at the equator. Tack the guidelines at the equator to
secure. Pins may be removed at this point (Figure 4).

4. Stitch The Design
Round 1ÏUse off-white pearl cotton #5 (DMC #746 or Anchor #275) or color of
your choice:
Step A (Figures 5 and 6) Î Rotate the mari as needed, with the North Pole
upward at all times.
A1. Begin at A1 below the obi and to the left of any guideline (Mark this
guideline with a starting pin for future reference). Figure 5 shows this
stitch beginning on vertical guideline #1.
A2. Place thread along the diagonal guideline to A2. Take a stitch at A2,
making sure the stitch is made along the diagonal guideline located right of
vertical guideline #2.
A3. Place thread along vertical guideline #2 and continue across the North Pole
and down the opposite side to A3. Take a stitch at A3, making sure the
stitch is made along the diagonal guideline located left of vertical guideline
#6.
A4. Place thread along the diagonal guideline, down to the obi and make a
stitch at A4 around vertical guideline #7 below the obi.
A5. Place thread along the diagonal guideline to A5. Take a stitch at A5,
making sure the stitch is made the along the diagonal guideline located
right of vertical guideline #8.
A6. Place thread along vertical guideline #8 and continue across the North Pole
and down the opposite side to A6. Take a stitch at A6, making sure the
stitch is made along the diagonal guideline located left of vertical guideline
#4.
A7. Place thread along the diagonal guideline, down to the obi and make a
stitch at A7, around vertical guideline #5 below the obi.
A8. Place thread along the diagonal guideline to A8. Take a stitch at A8,
making sure the stitch is made along the diagonal guideline located right of
vertical guideline #6.
A9. Place thread along vertical guideline #6 and continue across the North Pole
and down the opposite side to A9. Take a stitch at A9, making sure the
stitch is made along the diagonal guideline located left of vertical guideline
#2.
A10. Place thread along the diagonal guideline, down to the obi and make a
stitch at A10, around vertical guideline #3 below the obi.
A11. Place thread along the diagonal guideline to A11. Take a stitch at A11.
Make sure the stitch is made along the diagonal guideline located right of
vertical guideline #4.
A12. Place thread along vertical guideline #4 and continue across the North Pole
and down the opposite side to A12. Take a stitch at A12, making sure the
stitch is made along the diagonal guideline located left of vertical guideline
#8.
A13. Place thread along the diagonal guideline, down to the obi and complete the
round with a stitch at A13, entering at vertical guideline #1 below the obi.
Exit the needle left of guideline #8 and below the obi to begin Step B
(Figure 7, B1).
