aviation is followed by technical
descriptions, service histories, squadron
allocations, major operational events,
illustrated by photographs, and a general
arrangement drawing of each major type
oflandplane, seaplane, flying-boat, or
helicopter.
This main section is followed by short
descriptions and photographs of all other
types used including rigid and non-rigid
airships.
Appendices include listings of naval
aircraft strength, aircraft carriers, and other
ships to which aircraft have been attached.
The collection of the Fleet Air Arm Museum
is presented in detail and there is a
bibliography.

PREFACE
British Na\'a! Airua/i first appeared in llJS0 as a companion volume to mv
earlier book Aircrafl of Ihe Rom! Air Force. and the same format bas been
maintained: each main type of aircraft is illustrated with one or more photo-
graphs and a three-view general arrangement drawing. accompanied by gcneral
narrative on operational history and a technical specification. Once again the
aircraft are arranged alphabetically under manufacturers. and thence chronolo-
gically in the order of their appearance. An index to the manufacturers appears
at the front of the book. a further index at the back of the book listing aircraft
under their type names.
Over 100 main types are included. ranging from the Avro S04 to the Wight
'Converted' Seaplane. There are also appendices covering 160 more types of
aircraft. airships which came under the control of the Royal Navy between
January IlJ14 and December llJ!lJ. and brief particulars of seaplane-carriers and
aircraft-carriers whicli have embarked British naval aircraft.
Whereas the RAF book began with the formation of that Service in April
1918. the present work takes as its starting point the beginning of properly
organised naval flying with the creation of the Royal Flying Corps. Naval Wing.
constituted by Royal Warrant on 13 May llJ 12. Whilst not claiming to be utterly
exhaustive (a few types presented to the Admiralty by enthusiastic private
aviators before this date have not been included), it is nevertheless true that
virtually every aircraft used since llJI2 by the Naval Wing. the Royal Naval Air
Service and the Fleet Air Arm has found a place. including those of foreign
origin.
In addition to the technical data presented. every effort has been made to
include all relevant information on the units equipped with the various types and
the ships in which they were carried. Much new information will also be found in
the pages dealing with the more famous aircraft of the 19l4-IR and llJ3lJ-45
periods. which have been treated at the somewhat greater length warranted by
their historical importance.
In preparing this book I have always had reason to be grateful for the
