British-born nigel French designed this issue’s “Mind
the Gaps” and “Automatic inDesign” features. You can

inluenced by what’s around you; in my case
it’s more intuitive than conscious. Because i
lived so long in the U.s., these days my design
style, like my accent, is very mid-Atlantic.
Terri Stone: Howdidyouapproachthedesign
ofthetwofeaturesyoucreatedforthisissue?
Nigel French: i chose a 7-column grid because i liked
the lexibility it ofered when sizing and positioning
the pictures. Because this is an online publication
i didn’t have to worry about working with a inite
number of pages, but had the luxury of incorporating
a generous amount of white space into the layouts.
i wanted to ind a comfortable balance between
working within the magazines existing template
and doing something a bit diferent. that meant
changing the grid and—since “Mind the Gaps” was
about hyphenation and justiication—working with
body text that used both. the tricky part was keeping
the igures with the text that they related to.
TS: IfDavidBowieandBarryGibbfromtheBeeGees
weretoengageinaistight,whowouldwin?
NF: Well, i hope they can resolve their diferences
peaceably—especially since i’d be worried about
Bowie damaging his dental work, which must’ve cost
a fortune. But if push came to shove, i’d be rooting
for Bowie, though i wouldn’t put money on it.
TS: Whatisyourtypicaldesignprocess?
NF: Meeting with the client to discuss their needs,
seeing what and how they’re currently doing
things, checking out the competition, looking for
inspiration. once the parameters are understood
and the terms agreed, i’ll send the client some ideas
in progress and together we’ll discuss what works,
what doesn’t, what they like, what they don’t.
i’ll do my best to tactfully steer things in the
direction of the solutions that i think work best. i’ve
learnt never to send a client an idea i’m luke-warm
about, even it’s only to “make up the numbers.”

TS: What’syourfavoritetypeface?
NF: Like many designers i go through phases, but
Myriad Pro is always a good choice, the typographic
equivalent of a favorite pair of jeans—versatile,
comfortable, and always close at hand.
TS: Istheresuchathingasregionaldesign?
NF: Deinitely, although i’m not sure i can
articulate what it is. You can’t help but be

NF: i have at least 101 variations on pasta with pesto.
