FOREWORD
One of the beauties of living in somewhere like Poland
is the contrast in climates between the summer and the
winter. With temperatures topping 30 degrees Celsius
in the summer, it may well be the case that you will be
reading this guide with temperatures having moved nearly
50 degrees south of that. And with that the appearance
of Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia changes dramatically.
Instead of pleasure boats chugging up and down the
Gdansk waterfront past the Gdansk Crane as they do in
the summer expect to see fishermen sitting out in the
middle of the river (the Motlawa) next to a hole in the ice.
In Sopot, the sandy beaches which in the hot weather
heave with sun worshippers, are now snowy beaches
covered with nothing more than the occasional walker and
flocks of swans. In Gdynia, find the Dragon pirate ship now
confined to parties quayside instead of sailing out around
the bay, but the party still going strong regardless. In fact
find a completely different place to visit than if you come
in the summer. Summer cocktails replaced by hot wine.
Salads and light meals served on the terraces replaced
by hearty soups and fortifying main courses next to a fire.
And swimming in the sea replaced by skiing on the slopes
(unless you’re one of those fools who heads out into the
icy bay every New Year’s Day. The temperature range in
effect creates at least two different places giving you a
reason to visit and enjoy the city twice as often. And each
time you visit you’ll find new places opening, new areas
developing and new things to see and do. In this issue you
can read about all the new bars, restaurants and clubs
that have sprung up including one place in Gdynia which
has a menu with no prices. Keep an eye out for a whole
series of events connected to the anniversary of the
birth of one of the city’s most famous sons – Johannes
Hevelius. And read about another of the city’s well-known
sons whose contribution to science probably we really
ought to honour by only using his form of temperature
measurement (like America does). So if you are reading
this while it is 0 degrees Fahrenheit (nearly -18 Celsius in
case you were wondering) do remember to wrap up warm.
