The Art of Noise
In next month’s issue, our cover feature
is the art of noise and how we can make
the most of Linux as a sound studio.
Linux is developing fast, and it is starting
to make breakthroughs in the profes-
sional music studio. We start by taking a
look at Scrubby’s world. Scrubby is the
new virtual stylus logo for the Sweep
project.
Sweep is an audio editor and live
playback tool for GNU/Linux,
BSD and compatible systems.
A wonderfully professional
tool, Sweep supports many
music and voice formats
including WAV, MP3,
Ogg Vorbis, AIFF,
and Speex, with
multichannel edit-
ing and LADSPA
effects plugins.
It is also Free
Software, available
under the GNU General
Public Licence.
We then move
onto Rosegarden.
This is an attractive,
user-friendly audio and
MIDI sequencer, score
editor, and general-pur-
pose music composition
and editing application for
Unix and Linux. It is cur-
rently approaching 1.0 feature
completion and beta testing
following two and a half years
of sustained active devel-
opment. Already it has
featured in many articles
in the professional music
press.
If that is not enough, we
will look at a system to
simulate audio synthesis
(modular synthesis) in real-
time and allow for song
composition, a project for
recording and editing MIDI and
producing music scores.

Networking Guide
After lots of feedback from you, we take
a look at how to build computer net-
works under Linux. We start with basic
principles and quickly guide you through
the setting up of an interconnected sys-
tem. We will cover the creation of Linux
gateways that give you an entrance to
another network.
In most enterprises, the gateway is the
computer that routes the traffic from
your workstation to the Internet and
beyond. The gateway is also associated
with both a router, which uses headers
and forwarding tables to determine
where packets are sent, and a switch,
which provides the actual path for the
packets in and out of the gateway.
The World of Zope
Zope is an open source web application
server primarily written in the Python
programming language. It features a
transactional object database that can
store not only content and custom data,
but also dynamic HTML templates,
scripts, a search engine, and relational
database (RDBMS) connections.
Zope’s security also allows you to turn
control over parts of a web site to other
organizations or individuals.
There are numerous products (plug-in
Zope components) available for down-
load to extend the basic set of site
building tools. Zope includes its own
HTTP, FTP, WebDAV, and XML-RPC serv-
ing capabilities.
