he Sair/GNU Linux certification
Slackware distributions and provides
reference data of where to download
utilities and files. As a study book the
chapters cover enough information to
complete the test exam supplied. As a
reference book for Apache it does
surprisingly well. As the information is
aimed to be a crammer it means all
information is relevant and so gets you
up to speed quickly. Some slight
Americanisation of spelling is noticeable
but a nice glossary at the back is worth
reading.

exam system to give Linux a more
credible training path. To become a
certified engineer you are required to
pass the core concepts and practices
exam plus three elective exams. This
book covers the Apache and Web
servers elective exam and is split into
separate sections, which deal with
distinct topics such as installation or
security. Each section is given a chapter,
which explains the basic information.
There then follows detailed exercises to
walk you through all areas you need to
cover and practice questions and
answers to prepare for the exam. At the
end of the book you’ll find a sample
exam, which is in multichoice format.

or all the new users of Linux out
there who are looking for a good
introduction to the subject (and
anyone else who has not already come
across it), although it has been around
since 1997, there is still nothing better
than A Practical Guide to Linux by
Mark Sobell.
The book has a forward by Linus
To rvalds and he recommends it to
anyone interested in learning about
Linux.
The first part of the book is perfect
for new users as it features an
overview of Linux and then an
extensive tutorial to guide the new
user through starting to use the
system. The latter part of the book is
aimed at the more experienced user
and goes into more detail on subjects
such as GUI’s, networking and systems
administration.
The second section of the book
describes various utilities including
examples to be downloaded from the
Internet. There is a very compre-
hensive appendix, written as FAQ’s to
help the new user with
troubleshooting. All in all, this is a
classic textbook, clearly written and
with much to recommend it even to
experienced users, which has retained
its place at the front of the field.
