Welcome
The spectre of Gary McKinnon raised its head again a few weeks back. In case
you don’t know who he is, he is an English computer hacker who managed to
crash into the Pentagon system and saw all sorts of things that he wasn't meant
to see. While he would acknowledge that with hindsight, it wasn't the brightest
thing to do, he was spurred on to do it by a desire to discover what the American
government knew about UFO's. And although he didn't find out anything specific
to that subject, he did come across one or two interesting things like for example
the fact that the American military has “non terrestrial officers”, which strongly
implies that there is something else permanently moored "up there" besides the
Space Station.
The Americans of course want to extradite him from the UK and have classified
him in such a manner that if tried and convicted, he would go away to prison for
a very long time indeed. And while some of you many mutter under your breath
after having read that last sentence, "And why not?" I would remind you that
Gary was not working for any foreign government or intent on any espionage
against the United States. He was just trying to find out "UFO secrets", a naive
thing to do indeed but hardly worthy of a life sentence in an American jail.
Recklessness in the pursuit of UFO information is a theme of this issue of

It is something that comes up time and time again in our main featured interview
with Nick Redfern and inevitably, at least on our part, there is a certain amount of
sympathy towards Gary McKinnon even if another part of me can't help thinking
that he was a bit of a plonker. There is a certain amount of antipathy towards so
called "direct action" within ufology on the part of some based mainly on the
belief that it brings the subject into disrepute and attracts bad publicity. You
pays your money and makes your choice. You can slave away doing everything
legitimately for years and almost certainly make relatively little or slow progress
or you can say, "Stuff that" and try and go directly to the source. Doing it that
way, you may hit pay dirt or you may get caught and if you get caught then there
is usually some sort of mess afterwards.
As fundamentally I am a coward, I admire the activities of those much braver
than me and would give them every encouragement. To an extent, people like
Gary McKinnon and Matthew Bevan, who you will read about later, do our dirty
work and I feel that to an extent we are in their debt even though I know there
are some of you reading this who will not agree with me on that point. I wish
Gary every success in fighting his extradition and believe that the combination of
British justice and a desire on the part of the American intelligence community
not to see their dirty washing laundered in public may swing things in his favour.
You may notice that the two principal interviews in this issue of
UFO Review
are
with authors who both have books published by Anomalist Books. The owner of
the company, Patrick Huyghe, refuses pointblank to pay me any money for
promoting his starlets in this manner which I think is pretty tight. Nevertheless,
Anomalist Books seems to be an exciting new venture into the world of publishing
as its focus is most definitely on "our" subject. They employ the "print on
demand" technology which in some quarters is heavily criticised as not being
"proper publishing". Proper publishing of course means guessing in advance how
many copies the book is likely to sell and hoping that you get it right. And when

"they" get it wrong we all benefit as their overruns end up in the bargain
basement basket selling at a third of the original price. Seems like this isn't
something that is going to happen to Anomalist Books. I wish Patrick and his
staff all the best.
