Compact
For the compact A2 aluminum-bodied model launched in 1999 Audi developed a new TDI engine – a three-cylinder unit
with two valves per cylinder. For smooth running, there was a balancer shaft in the crankcase. A new technical highlight
was the pump-nozzle fuel injection system. There were three separate compact injectors in the cylinder head, operating
at a maximum pressure of 2,050 bar. The 1.4 TDI’s power output was 55 kW (75 hp) and its maximum torque 195 Nm
(143.82 lb-ft), reached at an engine speed of 2,200 rpm. A later version of this engine, with VTG turbocharger, developed
66 kW (90 hp) with a peak torque of 230 Nm (169.64 lb-ft).
