Origin
Posterior tubercles of the transverse
processes of the 2nd through 7th cervical
vertebrae
Insertion
Slants diagonally to attach to the cranial
surface of the first rib, anterior and lateral
to the groove for the subclavian artery
Actions
With insertion fixed:
Lateral cervical flexion to the same side;
rotates cervical spine to opposite side; flex
head obliquely foreward and sideways
Support and elevate the upper rib cage
when carrying, lifting, or pulling heavy
objects
With origin fixed:
important auxiliary muscles of inspiration
(more commonly used than are the
sternocleidomastoid muscles)

Anterior (motor) branches of the C2-C7
spinal nerves
