Revolutionof1911andtwoworldwars.
Therevolutionof1911thattoppledtheManchudynastyandestablishedthe
RepublicofChinaalsobroughtinitswakeanumberofproblemsforthe
Buddhistsangha[clergy].Followingthepoliticalrevolution,anintellectual
climatewasusheredinthatwasunfriendlytotheinterestsofBuddhism...
TheattackandcriticismagainstBuddhism...resultedinanumberofdiscri-
minatorymeasures,suchasspecialtaxesandcontributionsbeingleviedon
temples,monasteriesbeingappropriatedforuseasbarracksandpolicestati-
ons,tenantsontemplelandsbeingencouragednottopayrent,andBuddhist
