The andiron in this month’s issue is the
second one to appear in the Journal..
The first one appeared in Issue #32 and
featured a forge welded finial.

This andiron features a 1” square bar log rest. Using
wrought iron or a low carbon steel—like 1018 instead of
A36—will make the bar less subject to deterioration. The
three sizes of material needed for this project are ½”x 1”
flat, ¼”x 1” flat and 1” square.

MARK THE BENDING
POINTS WITH SOAP STONE
OR WHITE CHARCOAL FOR
MAKING ONE HALF OF THE
FACE OF THE ANDIRON.
SCROLL THE
TAPERED
END, COMPARING IT
TO A FULL SIZE
LAYOUT DRAWING
OF THE ANDIRON
AS YOU PROCEED.

THE CENTER SURFACE IS FLAT.
FOUR PIECES ARE REQUIRED.
MAKE THE LAST BEND AND UPSET IT
INTO A SQUARE CORNER, THEN UPSET
THE END AS SHOWN. FORGE THE OUTER
CORNER DOWN TO A TRIANGULAR SECTION.
THE STOCK WILL CURVE INWARD AS THE
EDGE IS FORGED DOWN.
BEND THE STOCK UP TO FORM
ONE HALF THE FINIAL AND TRIM
FLUSH WITH THE CENTER SURFACE.
