Vicki's Wood 'n Things
When the barrel holding my "hens & chicks" started falling apart last summer I started thinking
about making my own bucket. I searched the web and was able to find some helpful articles that
explained how to go about it.
I bought 1X4X8 red cedar at Lowes. I needed 1 1/2
boards to make my 12"dameter bucket. I ran
them through the paner and then put a 15 degree
ange on each edge wth my tabe saw. Be sure to
attach a pece ofstraght scrap as an auxary ence
so that when you run the board through the second
tme the rst anged edge doesnt get stuck under
the saws ence. Look cosey and you can see Ive
camped a pece ofOSB to mne. I used my
Zag/Staney 2-Way Adustabe Fodng Sawhorse
wth adustabe heght to "catch"the ong boards as
they came ofthe saw.

Next,I cut 10 - 9"ong peces usng my mter saw
wth a stop bock camped to the actory stop to gve
me the proper ength wthout measurng each
pece. Ater that I measured and marked 2 peces
to be cut 11"ong or the rope hande to be attached
to ater.
Beore I went any urther I dd a dry-t,usng a
strap camp to hep the staves ne up. I was ucky
and everythng t ncey.
Next I routed dados whch woud gve a nce groove
or the back bandng that woud ater be apped to
"st"n . I used a 3/4"straght bt n my router
tabe. I adusted the ence so that the top ofthe
dado woud be 1 1/2"rom the top,or bottom when
the stave s pped. I set the depth to 1/8". The
nsde ofthe bucket has a 1/4"deep dado,1 1/2"

rom the bottom to receve a pywood crce (mne
was cut wth a 11 1/4"dameter)or the ower pot
to st on. Be sure to drla 1"hoe n the pywood
base or dranage.
Trm the corners ofthe two 11"staves. I marked
my dagonalne 1"n rom each sde and 1"down
rom the top. That gave me a tte trange shape I
snpped ofwth the mter saw. Drla centered
hoe 1"from the top ofeach 11"stave wth a bt of
approprate sze to accommodate the sze ofrope
you wluse or the hande.
Gue up needs to move qucky and s rather nerve
rackng wth so many peces. I ad down the staves

n a straght ne ater nng everythng up n a
"standng"poston. I apped gue to 2 staves,
oned them,stood them up and kept addng staves
to ths structure. Ater 5 or 6 staves,appy gue to
the crce base and nsert t n the nsde dado. Add
remanng staves. I paced wax paper around the
bucket hed together wth some maskng tape to
keep gue ofmy band camps and keep the camps
rom gettng stuck to the bucket. I apped the
camps,then rpped the mdde secton ofwax
paper out to check stave agnment. I turned the
bucket upsde down and added some camps to ad
n agnment.
Jim Barry, at Woodworkershop.com gave me this tip: Lay out
a width of wax paper longer than the bucket is round. Lay
down 2 or 3 strips of masking tape sticky side up, on the wax
paper. Lay the staves on the tape, the outside of the stave
facing down. Apply glue to all edges required. Start to "roll up"
the staves. When you have 3-4 rolled up, add the bottom (if
one is required in the plan) and continue to roll up. When
done, add your web clamps and let dry.
Another tip comes from John H. of PA: clamp a straightedge
on the bench to align the pieces.
I et the bucket to dry overnght. The next day
when I removed the camps and paper ths s what I
had ater sandng ofa ew gue drps.
I got back bandng rom Lowes umberyard. It was
ree as t was what they cut ofbundes ofumber
and throw out. Cut the bandng to approxmate
ength. Longer woud be better. Camp t n one of

the dados n the center ofthe back,makng sure to
have 2 to 2 1/2"on the "at"porton ofthe stave. I
started wrappng the bandng around the bucket. It
was rather stfso I hed t to the bucket wth a
sprng camp on each stave. When I got to the
"back"I overapped the end a good 2"and ran 2
screws through the bandng,makng sure to secure
the "start"and "nsh"end ofthe bandng. I had 1
1/4"screws and the wood s 3/4"so I snpped of
some ofwhat poked through.

Unortunatey,due to the drought we had ths year
the owers I panted for t a coupe months earer
ddnt ast very we.
In alhonesty I have to oer a word ofcauton. The
FREE bandng had one drawback. It was a tte
rusty n paces. I consdered stanng t and wsh I
had. After beng exposed to the weather or ew
weeks the bandng "bed"a dark stan down the
sdes ofthe bucket. My hope s that by next year as
the cedar "weathers"the "beedng"wlnot be
notceabe. An aternatve to the metalbandng
coud be a used bke nner tube.
I was ortunate enough to nd an artce at WOOD
Onne caed "Staves & Segments". It expaned
how to cacuate the ange I needed or my staves
and how to cacuate the dameter ofmy bucket.
