Chapter One
ou’re a whore. You’ve never done an
honest day’s work in your life. Aren’t you
ashamed?”
Lance walked slowly to the window and looked
out. There was a strange man sitting on one of
those electric lawnmowers. He was driving up
and down in a straight line, meticulously trying to
annihilate any stray blade of grass that might have
escaped the blade. Freddy had loved the chaos of
that lawn, and he had venomously refused to let
the gardener cut it more than once a month.
Ironically, the more William abhorred the utter
unruliness of that lawn, the more Freddy loved it.
“Are you planning to pretend I don’t exist?”
Lance turned and looked at the man who stood
in the middle of the study. This was Freddy’s
room really, the room where he came to write, to
relax. Rage and vindictiveness didn’t belong here.
“Can we go into the living room?” Lance inquired,
not waiting for an answer. No, he wouldn’t sully

this room with this conversation, if one could call
what they were about to have a conversation.
“I want you out of here,” William came to the
point the minute they were in the living room.
Yes, this was much better. This is the room
where William usually did most of his bellowing.
“I have three months,” Lance told him, without
emotion. “That’s what it says in your father’s
will.”
“It’s a fine wonder you didn’t weasel this place
out of him as well.”
Freddy wanted him to have the house, but he
had no intention of telling William that. Built in
the early nineteen hundreds, it was the only
freestanding mansion in Manhattan, planted right
in the middle of prime real estate on Riverside
Drive. William would have tied it up in court
forever.
It had always puzzled him why Freddy had
bought this monstrosity anyway. He had needed it
like a hole in the head really. It required a lot of
structural work, which Freddy never wanted to
bother with, and most of the rooms weren’t used.
They traveled so much, that really, they rarely
lived in the place.
“I want to put the For Sale sign up,” William
was saying now, impatiently running a hand
through his steel grey hair.
