A Personal Account of London, by Lord George mace
London... The ci t ’s allure has drawn many over t he cent uries. Be i t Roman sol diers bivouacking in
t hat finest of river valleys – t he Thames – or a young diarist looking for rank and posi t ion like James
Bot hwell, London has always had an effect on t hose t hat visi t her.
The London of t oday is a bust ling and prosperous met ropolis, t he cent re of not just our empire, but t he
ent ire commercial worl d. This at t ract s all manner of visi t ors and resident s, from t he count ry poor,
looking for work, t o merchant s from t he Americas and Far East, t o asylum-seekers from t he aut ocrat s
of t he cont inent . On her st reet s you can see El dren lords and ladies, dressed in t he lat est Parisian
fashions; a gypsy from East ern Europe running a t rained bear t hrough a dance t o t he t ones of an organ
grinder. Dwarves – coaxed from t he clockwork shops of Swi t zerland t o aid our local machinist s. Sailors,
sol diers, craf t sman, and labourers; high finance, governance, and art – all come t oget her in t his ci t y
which surpasses all of her count erpart s t hroughout t he worl d.
When I was approached t o wri t e t his int roduct ory scrawl, I was asked t o elaborat e on my opinions
of London. Why has she been so very successful? The Thames, surely, some woul d say – i t provided t he
foundat ion for t he commercial success of Empire. Coul d i t be t he pull of lay lines, t hose myst ic
veins t hat power t he globe’s mana, her spiri t, her essence? This is of t ci t ed by my t haumat urgically
minded colleagues of t he West End. Coul d i t be t he vast scope of hist ory, of t his most ancient
of monarchies? Or perhaps t he indefat igable spiri t of t he Londoner against powers royal and
parliament ary? Coul d i t be t he concent rat ion of indust ry – more profi t able t han even our
Midlands – t hat cast a warm orange glow t o t he sun and give us t hat charcoal smell of success? Or
t hat i t is t he seat of t he most successful and Enligh t ened government t o grace t his Eart h?
All t hat and more, dear readers. London...London is England. And how goes England, so goes t he worl d!
