This 1930s inspired beret is crocheted in a 50/50 alpaca wool blend and is
updated with a thoroughly modern slouch.
Skill level: Advanced beginner/intermediate
Techniques used: crocheting circularly, bobble stitches,
decreases
Materials:
1 skein Berrocco Ultra Alpaca (50% alpaca, 50% wool; 215 yds [198m]/100g;
shown in #6285 “Oceanic Mix”)
5 mm/H crochet hook
split ring stitch marker
tapestry needle
Gauge:
5 single crochets = 2”
1 Big bobble measures 1” across
Band of hat measures 25”
Special Stitches:
BB: Big Bobble
Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, pull through loop (3 loops on hook).
Repeat 4 more times for 15 loops in total on hook. Yarn over and pull through
all 15 loops.
SB: Small Bobble
Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, pull through loop (3 loops on hook).
Repeat 2 more times for 9 loops in total on hook. Yarn over and pull through
all 15 loops

Pattern:
Ch 65, sl st into first ch to join
Rounds 1-6: Ch 1, sc in each st around
Rounds 7, 8 & 9 : Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts, 1BB in next st rep from * around and
sl st in beg sc to join.
Rounds 10 - 15 : Ch 1, *sc in next 2 stitches, 1SB in next st rep from * around
and sl st in beg sc to join.
Round 16 : Ch 1, sc2tog in each stitch around, decreasing total stitch count
by half.
Round 17 : Ch 1, *sc in next 2 stitches, 1SB in next st * Rep from * around and
sl st in beg sc to join.
Round 18 : Ch 1, sc2tog in each stitch around, decreasing total stitch count
by half.
Round 19 : Ch 1, *sc in next 2 stitches, 1SB in next st* Rep from * around and
sl st in beg sc to join.
Round 20 : Ch 1, sc2tog in each stitch around, disregarding round ends, and
continuing to decrease in this manner until 3 stitches remain. sc3tog.
Cut yarn and draw through remaining st to finish off.
Hand wash gently, then block by stretching over a dinner plate, if desired.
