South Dakota, a state boasting a veritable array of photo ops. In this
often quaint but never dull slice of America, you’ll encounter stunning
landscapes of plains, prairies and mountains, historic landmarks of
battlegrounds and presidential figures, and majestic wildlife roaming
free—all alongside Nikon professional photographers Layne Kennedy and

The photo journey will begin at Badlands National Park, an absolute
must-see for photographers keen on landscape and nature shots.
Sometimes undulating, sometimes rugged, the topography of Badlands is
as distinct as it is breathtaking—from carved spires and jagged buttes to
deep canyons and grass prairies. Your lens will also have a chance to spot
several remarkable and unique animals amid the more than 64,000 acres
are considered wilderness: bighorn sheep, bison, antelope and black-
footed ferrets. Capture images of this well-preserved land so richly steeped
in thousands of years of Native American culture, and compose a true
portrait of American history.
Traveling into South Dakota’s Black Hills, turn your lenses to the
spectacular scenery and abundant wildlife of Custer State Park. Towering
rock formations, such as the famous Needles, make for jaw-dropping,
frame-filling sights. As for wild animals, there is no shortage here—with
its famous herd of 1500 free roaming bison, prairie dog towns, elk,
deer, mountain lions and feral burros, you’ll have ample opportunity to
photograph several species against the backdrop of their natural habitats.
No visit to South Dakota would be complete without setting sights on
Mount Rushmore. Practice shooting this historic monument from unique
angles, and capture the true grandeur of one of the most beloved icons of
America. Be sure to take advantage of the other photo ops available at this
landmark, among them the varied bird population, such as turkey vultures,
bald eagles, hawks, and meadowlarks, as well as the colorful spring flora
of snapdragons, sunflowers and violets growing along the walking paths
in the park.
Near Hot Springs. in the Southern Black Hills, spend a full day at
the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, a picturesque place reminiscent
of an America centuries ago—an unending vista of pristine prairie land
stretching to the horizon where wild horses roam free. Whether taking
fast-paced action shots of mustangs galloping across a shallow river or
capturing a calmer scene of a mare and her colt quietly grazing, you’ll
leave with amazing photos that speak of this region’s true character.
