Introduction
When the prototype Lockheed XP-3 wa
shown to the S press and public for the
fwt time, in 1938, there was univer al
prai e for it incredibly sleek lines. The U
rmy Air orps had never een anything
like it; certainly no single-seat fight r wa
ever that big. And when its performance
was announc d, the praise for Lockheed
appr ach d adulation. To a great extent
rhis faith in the company's product never
waned, which in some ways cloud d judge-
ment. Under the impetu of war and rapid
rechnical advance the fact that the long-
range P-3 could actually be outpaced by a
sll1gle-engine fighter took some time to
gra p. The Lightning could certainly
first American fighter to do so - but the
tragic fact was that it could not always get
back. This was not a flaw that could be
attributed to Burbank's brilliant engineers,
but a problem that was b yond anyone's
control; one that could literally be blamed
on the weather. But ask any pilot posted to
the South Pacific and faced with flying for
several hours over water, impenetrable
jungle and murderous enemy troops what
he preferred, and the answer would come
down firmly on the side of Lockheed's
twin-boom killer.
From almost any angle the Lightning
looked the part; a deadly, menacing and
purpo ful warplane with a distinctive and
unique layout.

naval gunner, could fail to recognize them.
This narrative retells the P-3 tory with
the intention of bringing the reader a few
fact and figure , and photographs, that
hav not been fully explored elsewhere.
