This is by far the most difficult game to run under Windows XP. The best way to enjoy the game is to
install VMWare and use a Windows 98SE image file. I think both can be found at Demonoid. Another
way is to follow these instructions :

1.  Decompress the game image files,
2.  Mount (using Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools) or burn in a CD,
3.  Install the game, the installer runs in XP (on some machines you cannot enter slashes in
    the directory selection box so install it in the default directory),
4.  After the installation is completed you can copy the whole directory in a different location
    (it worked for me and the game played without any problems. If you have any problems leave
    it in the default directory),
5.  Install VDM Sound (I have included the latest version),
6.  Decompress the file "X-COM Apocalypse Utilities.rar" in the game's directory (they must all
    be in the same directory as "XcomApoc.exe"),
7.  OPTIONAL : In the file "Run Xcom Apoc.bat" you can edit the numbers after "mousectl.com".
    They control how fast the mouse moves,
8.  Use a text editor (notepad or wordpad) to open the file "XCom3.cfg". You should see the drive
    letter of the CD/DVD drive (real or virtual) from which you have installed the game. Inside
    "Run XCom Apoc.bat" in the line "fakecd .. /L:D >nul" change the D with the drive letter in your
    "XCom3.cfg". (Just the letter, no slashes or anything else),
9.  Run "Setup.exe" and set up a sound card. Use the settings "Soundblaster Pro", 220, 7, 1.
    These are the default settings of the VDM Sound Emulator (if you have changed them, use your
    settings). DO NOT TEST THE SOUND CARD! You will crash your PC. Save the settings and exit,
10. Right click on "XcomApoc.exe" and select "Properties". Go to the "Compatibility" tab and
    check all boxes (run in Win95 compatibility mode; Run in 256 colours; Run in 640x480 screen
    res; Disable visual themes; Turn off advanced text services). Disable your screen saver (if
    the screen saver is activated then the game will probably hang or behave strangely),
11. To run the game, right click on "Run Xcom Apoc.bat" and select "Run with VDMS",
12. Enjoy the game!!

As far as I know there is no patch for the game. Also in the file "X-COM Apocalypse Utilities.rar"
there is a way to run the game without the image or a CD (read Readme.1st) but it didn't work for
me. If anyone manages to run the game with these instructions drop me a message.

If the above instructions don't work for you try this :
In step 10 and after you have checked all boxes on the "Compatibility" tab go to the "Program" tab,
click "Advanced..." and use the AUTOEXEC.NT and CONFIG.NT files that are in the "X-COM Apocalypse
Utilities.rar" file.

If still you cannot run the game then post a message and I'll what I can do.
