usability, and I came across this article, "10
Useful Usability Findings and Guidelines" by
Dmitry Fadeyev ( http://www.smashingmagazine.
com/2009/09/24/10-useful-usability-findings-and-
guidelines/ ). It is not a new article, originally
published on the 24th of September, 2009, but its
information is still timely. It covers just a few basic
things that you can do to improve usability and ef-
ficiency on your site. I was not surprised to find out
that users focus on faces on a site, so if you have a
photo of a person on your site, that area of the site
will get looked at more (based on an eye-tracking
study). However, I was intrigued to find out that
you could direct that increased focus to other areas
of your site by using a face that looks directly at
the text that you want to highlight.
The thing I really liked about this article was that
it took other longer studies and distilled them into
a list that I could scan through. It quickly gave me
tangible things that I could do to improve my sites.
I like that. There are so many things to read and
keep track of, that it gets overwhelming at times.
It's nice to have someone go through the details and
give the rest of us the highlights.
This is exactly what we are doing on the new

you'd like to read more, but this way, you can stay

And speaking of making your day easier, we have a
bunch of articles this month to make your develop-
ment easier. Forrest's article on Digitalus Framework
will make writing custom CMS solutions simple, and
Sharon's article is going to make it easier to work
with remote files. Maarten will show you how easy it
can be to build a scalable application in the cloud,
and Yegor introduces us to FaZend, which will help
you build Zend Framework apps. Ron wants to help
makes your data structure decisions easier, and
Adrian shares some secrets to make installing Drupal
on a VPS a snap. Arne has some security tips for your
privacy, and Marco wraps up the details.
