A/V-() 리가 없다

'There is no reason why...'

'There is no reason (to) ~.'

there is no reasonable expectation that . . .

It is used to express disbelief, skepticism or doubt.

This pattern (negative form) must be used as a declarative statement and cannot be used as an interrogative statement. To use as an interrogative statement one must use the positive form A/V + () 리가 있다.

Np.:

"해결책이 없을리가 있어?"

"There must be a solution."

"그렇게 똑똑한 사람이 그런일을 할리가 있어요?"

"A man so clever as he is not likely to do such a thing."

" 소문이 사실일리가 있어?"

"The romor couldn't be true."

It is used to express the unlikelihood of something occurring. What appears in the dialogue is used to mean that the report should be error-free. For instance, if one wishes to express no one likes to hear negative comments, one can say, ``나쁜 말을 들었는데 좋아할 리가 없지요””S/he is not going to be happy after hearing such harsh criticism).’’

A/V-()ㄹ지도 모르다

'it might ~'

'it may ~.'

· This pattern is used when there is doubt about a certain fact and when something isn't known for sure.

· The grammatical structure used to express probability or possibility about a present state or future action. This structure literally means "I don't know either whether or not," and it is most commonly translated as "Subject + might +verb." This structure is similar in meaning to -/ 수도 있다.

· (어쩌면) ...-()ㄹ지도 모르다 (lit.: one doesn't know whether) maybe, perhaps it might be the case that. The 어쩌면 does two things: 1) it flags the upcoming perhaps pattern and 2) can also attenuate the maybe~perhaps (somehow~who knows?) meaning.

·

오후에 비가 올지도 모르는데 우산을 가져가는 어때요?

"시험에 떨어질지도 몰라."

"It might fail the exam."

"만지면 개가 물지도 몰라요."

"The dog may bite you if you touch it."

"조심해. 뜨거울지도 몰라."

"Watch out. It may be hot."

" 후회할지도 몰라."

"You may regret."
