This project was worked on a sewing
machine, and is aimed at improving beginner
to intermediate level, so some experience at
machine embroidery would be useful.
Materials Required:
Embroidery hoop and calico, cut enough on the
straight of the fabric to fit your hoop.
Acrylic paints: White, Blue and Red and
a small paintbrush.
Sylko machine threads: D127 Blue Violet, D462
Blue Pearl, 140 Lotus Blue, D349 Jubilee, 3 Light
Blue, D240 Peacock Green, D375 Dark Lime
Green, 202 Khaki, D466 Gay Yellow and D255
Blue Green.
Tracing paper and a Black pencil.
Dressmakers pins, masking tape and scissors.
Scrap piece of thin card 10cm x 15cm.
Paint palette or an old saucer.
Water erasable pen.
Lightbox: LB001.
Double sided tape: ADH13.
Card mounts: AP12U-68 Europa Ivory and
AP07U-29 Dark Blue.
with the blue to get a nice sky blue and colour
all the areas which are to be water and blue sky
with this mix, painting right up to the frame.
Leave a gap just above the horizon for the pink
sky as shown by the marks made on the frame.
Keep a little white paint aside for the clouds.
Add a dot of red to the remaining white and mix
to a light pink colour, paint the gap between the
sky and horizon with this allowing the edges to
merge naturally into the blue where they meet.
Lightly paint some clouds across the sky in
white. Discard the frame and leave the design
aside until completely dry.
Trace the design and border onto the tracing
paper using the black pencil. Place the tracing
onto a lightbox with the fabric centrally on top
so the tracing lines up with the painted area, the
light from behind will allow you to see the
design. Hold the paper and fabric together with
To Make The Card:
Draw an oblong 7.5cm x 9.5cm onto the spare
card and cut it out. This will leave a frame with
an aperture approximately 1cm larger all round
than the card mount (AP12U) aperture. Place the
frame over the diagram (next page) and mark the
horizon line onto each side of the frame. Make
another mark each side to show where the pink
sky meets the blue, this will be lower on the left
than the right side.
Lightly dampen the calico and place on a
clean surface ready to paint. Lay the hand cut
frame in the centre of the damp fabric. Use an
old saucer to mix paint on if you don’t have a
palette. I usually paint with my fingers, if you
are not comfortable with this, use a small paint-
brush instead. Start with small separate amounts
of blue, white and red paint. Mix enough white

pins and use masking tape to hold them onto the
surface of the lightbox.
Draw the design onto the painted calico using
a water erasable pen. The dotted lines show
where the aperture will fit, the dots show the
french knots, these are both for guidance only
and don’t need to be traced. Remove the tape,
pins and tracing from the fabric. You are now
ready to begin the embroidery, use the close up
picture for guidance as to where each type of
stitch is used as well as the colour. The stitching
will cover most, if not all of the pen lines.
Work the rocky areas first in zigzag stitch
using D127 blue violet for the darker rocks and
D462 blue pearl for the lighter ones. Work the
tree in zigzag stitch for the trunk and larger
branches and straight stitch for the finer branches
using 202 khaki.
The water is worked from side to side in
straight machine stitch using a mixture of four
colours and allowing the paint to show through
in places, this gives the lovely random effect and
needs a bit more explaining before you begin.
The overall shade of the water changes from
dark at the bottom to slightly lighter towards the
middle and top. This is achieved by changing
the mix of colours gradually as you work up (or
down) the design. These are not ‘hard and fast’
rules, as the effect should be random, but it may
help to use them as a guide and remember to
allow the blue paint to show through in places.
The colours used are 140 lotus blue, D349 jubilee,
3 light blue and D255 blue green.
Actual Size
Work the grasses and leaves in straight stitch
using D240 peacock green and D375 dark lime
green. The lower left corner should be completely
filled with grasses, those shown on the diagram
being just the outermost ones. Work the flowers
by hand as French knots using D466 gay yellow.
Check for any pen marks still showing and
remove them using a little water or the eraser if
your pen has one. Press the work on a folded
towel and cut off the excess fabric from around
the painted area.
Make a thread tassel if desired from colours
used in the project and stitch it onto the corner of
the work before mounting. Cut both outer panels
from the ivory card and trim the centre panel so
it fits neatly inside the blue card. Stick the ivory
panel behind the blue using double sided tape.
Place strips of double sided tape round the
back of the ivory aperture and making sure the
tassel goes through the aperture (if used), posi-
tion the work and press into place. Stick the card
closed using double sided tape.
