WRITING – MODEL ANSWERS

4a   A description

My best friend is Mark. He’s twenty-five and he’s a student. He’s tall and slim with short brown hair and green eyes. He has an open face with a lovely smile. He has a lot of friends because he’s very friendly and he’s always happy. He enjoys travelling and he has friends all over the world. I think he’s very intelligent too and I know he’s quite ambitious – he wants to be a journalist when he finishes his course at university. He’s very important to me because he always listens to me and he helps me when I don’t know what to do.

4b   A thank you letter

Dear Jack and Liz

I’m writing because I want to thank you for last week. You were very kind to me and I really enjoyed my stay with you.

I thought the day we spent at the beach was really great. I didn’t know that your country was so beautiful! I haven’t been to the sea for a long time so it was very nice and the weather was fantastic. I really enjoyed swimming in the sea the water was so warm and I saw some beautiful fish. In my country the sea is very cold and I never go swimming there.

I hope you will come and visit me soon. We have a big house, so you can stay with us.

Love

Maria

SPEAKING – TEACHER’S NOTES

Part One

You will ask the students several questions about themselves to practise giving personal information.

Examples might be:

·         What’s your full name?

·         Where are you from?

·         Tell me about your family.

·         What do you do? What’s your job?/What are you studying? (if student is at college)

·         What do you like doing at the weekends?

·         Which sports do you do?

·         What are your hobbies?

·         When is your birthday?

·         What are you wearing?

·         What’s the weather like today?

Part Two

You will ask the students to interact using a prompt card. Put students into pairs and explain that they are expecting a visitor who hasn’t visited their town/country before. (For those students who are studying abroad, they should discuss the place where they are studying.) Students should work together to organise some weekend activities for their visitor to enjoy and which are typical of the area.

Give each student a prompt card and say the following:

·         You are expecting a visitor who has never visited the area before. Use the prompt card to organise some weekend activities for your visitor to enjoy.

Part Three

You will ask specific questions regarding the theme of Part Two i.e. travel and sightseeing.

Suggested questions:

·         What kind of holidays do you enjoy the most?

·         What do you like doing when you go to new places?

·         Describe the last place you visited. What was good/bad about it?

·         How did you spend your time there?

·         Where are you going to go for your next holiday? Why?

·         If you have to travel on business, where have you been?

·         What is the most interesting/beautiful place you’ve ever visited? Why?
