A book review
The international bestseller, People of the Book, was written in 2008 by Australian author Geraldine Brooks. The main character in many ways is a medieval religious book which has survived through six hundred years. It was passed from hand to hand and crossed many countries including Austria, Spain, Italy and Bosnia before it ends up with a rare-book restorer, Hanna Heath. Through the tiniest of clues like salt crystals, a hair and wine stains, she is able to piece together the history of this priceless book.
I found this book both moving and exciting as you, the reader, are taken from country to country, from historical times to the modern day and back again. The author has clearly done a lot of research and has created a wonderful detective story which I would recommend to anyone who is interested in history.
3b A formal letter
Dear Mr Smith
Thank you for your letter requesting a reference for my colleague Adam Johnson who has recently applied for a teaching position at your school.
Mr Johnson is a senior English teacher at our school and has been working here for five years. Before that he was employed as a tutor at a private language school. During his time with us he has shown himself to be a very motivated and professional teacher. He is always very well-prepared and is popular both with his students and with the rest of the teaching staff. He is reliable and enthusiastic and is always happy to carry out any extra-curricular duties that may be required.
I would have no hesitation in recommending him. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
Yours sincerely
Martin Bentley
