Welcome to
Walking in Scotland
W hat is there not to like about walking in Scotland? Whatever the
2012 Olympic Gold Medallist, Katherine Grainger
season, the walking is exhilarating and breathtaking. In spring and
summer the landscape seems full of life and light, while in autumn
the countryside is painted in fabulous shades of fiery reds, oranges
and yellow. In winter, too, there are unique experiences, such as walking through
mist to arrive at sunlit tops or delighting in the amazing feeling of being alone in
a winter wonderland of snow. It can be so spine-tingling.
I love the fact that even the most popular hills in Scotland have a quieter route
where I can be alone or walk and talk with friends.
As this is the Year of Natural Scotland, there is no better time to explore our
beautiful and varied country, walking a new route, stepping out on a long-
distance waymarked trail or perhaps giving Munro bagging a go.
I was brought up in the west of Scotland but now, being a member of the GB
Rowing Squad, I have to live near the training base and I really miss Scotland,
whether it’s a walk around Edinburgh city, moorland walking in Deeside or hill
walking in the north west.
There are so many wonderful walks in Scotland it is hard to have a favourite. A
top contender is Stac Pollaidh, which was my first hill when young, where I left
my parents far behind in my excitement to get to the top. I also love the
Torridons, not just the classic peaks north of the loch but the less well-known
ones to the south where I bagged three Munros on a fantastic ridge walk on a
beautiful summer day in my teens.
However, I have a special love for Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, which I went up
alone late one day to think through whether I wanted to continue to row when I
was an unpromising novice at the university and came down convinced I would
persevere and try to get to the top. So I have a lot to thank Arthur’s Seat for!
If there is something in my life that I need to think through and need peace to
reflect on, it is great to get into the country either by myself or with my parents’
dog but otherwise it’s good to have company so that the splendour, grandeur
and awesome beauty can be appreciated with others.
As a full-time rower I have a very focused training regime, but walking offers a
different pace of exercise. Walking is great for everyone's fitness and it's one of
the most easily accessible ways to improve both your physical and mental
health. From short strolls to epic long-distance hikes, there is something for
everyone in Scotland.
I often think about what my next walking adventure will be. Perhaps it will be
a traverse of the Seven Sisters of Kintail. I would hope for a sunny summer's day
and the chance to admire the stunning views and share the humbling sensation
with friends – and definitely with transport at the end to get back to a hot bath
and a good meal. There can be little to beat a day like that.
