What do you get when you get three BMA-nominated artists together for an impromptu acoustic set in the XM satellite radio studios to record an even mix of classic blues and thrown-together originals? One of the best traditional albums of the year is what you get!

Fiona Boyes is the youngest of the trio here, winning the IBC in 2003 and nominated for her US debut Lucky 13 at least years BMA awards. Her raspy Melissa Etheridge meets blues sounding vocals and slick guitar work make her one of the most-watched new blues artists. Tom Mookie Brill has gigged up and down the East Coast for over 30 years making a name for himself as one of the most sought-after upright bass players. Rich DelGrossos mastery of the blues mandolin along with his significantly poignant songwriting makes his name instantly recognizable to blues fans.

With only four hours on a drive to Washington DC, this trio had to come up with an impromptu playlist that is a true tip of the hat to all things in traditional blues. For the three, the traditional songs and vibes presented here are what brought them to be artists in the first place. Cut completely live in the studio with no dubs and re-takes, the album nearly jumps out of your stereo with its flawless sound and the utter perfection of which the songs are executed.

I only have a few picky quips and squabbles but seemingly others might find them endearing and integral to the heart of the project. In essence, you can hear all these players enjoying themselves in a relaxed environment. The three players are all about the integrity of the traditional acoustic blues and they surely dont disappoint in delivering it. With some of the tracks running at the four and a half minute mark, they are little over their originals run time allowing the acoustic space to be used in a great swath. It may get tedious for some of the less attentive or newer blues fan listeners. Contemporary blues fans will be able to appreciate the album with the freshness of energy and newness that these players inflect in the songs. More importantly the work of DelGrossos mandolin makes it well worth the price of admission for any music fan. Not to diminish the brilliance of the other two artists involved, Boyes voice is very contemporary while her guitar playing is firmly implanted in the roots. Brill is rock solid on the upright and keeps the time straight and narrow. In fact, for all young bass players, Brill basically hands you the book for playing in the album. If you can keep up with him, then all you young players have it made. The six originals here presented by Boyes and DelGrosso show that they are true students of the blues tradition but able to stay in touch with a contemporary fan base. In all, the album works all the way around and many contemporary and traditional artists could learn from the principle and concept of the albums musical core: its all about maintaining integrity for tradition while still sounding fresh and interesting.
