An Otherwhere Adventure
Diamond Gulch was famous for its trains.
Teams of burly triceratops pulled the train cars
across the barren plains, carrying both those
hoping to strike it rich, and those who already
had.
Introduction
This adventure is appropriate for a campaign in
which steamtech has been recently introduced,
or in which steamtech is prevalent, but has yet
to spread to outlying areas.
As steamtech became more prevalent, though,
the number of dino-powered trains diminished.
Since railway companies and passengers
preferred the speed of steam locomotives,
by the time Diamond Gulch went bust, the
only dino-powered train left running was the
one carrying coal (previously regarded as
little more than waste, when compared to the
diamonds) to and from Silver City, sold for
coppers a pound to the railroad companies.
A character with the tracking ability will make
the adventure low more smoothly. Because
one of the main tasks in the adventure is to
round up frightened animals, a ranger or
druid is advisable. Additionally, both combat
expertise and social interaction skills are
necessary to overcome all of the obstacles in
the adventure.
Because such a wide range of skills are
necessary, a number of NPCs are available
throughout the adventure to ill in areas in
which the PCs may be lacking.
Unfortunately, that single, solitary, super-
slow dino-train gets in the way of the
Silver Railroad Company's steam-powered
locomotives, and Grumbeard Silvertongue, the
Company's owner, is none too happy about it.
Since his suppliers of coal are plentiful, he's
sent groups of his railway security men to
rustle Diamond Gulch's dinos, in an attempt to
shut the train down.
Background
Five years ago, Diamond Gulch was a
prosperous boom town. Prospectors of every
stripe, from miners to mages, slowly picked
the diamonds clean from the mines beneath the
town. Professional gamblers illed the casinos
and professional drunks illed the saloons. Five
years ago, everyone was making money.
Adventure Synopsis
Once the PCs are drawn into the plight of
Diamond Gulch, there are several major
obstacles that need to be overcome. They will
be working against the forces of a power-mad
rail baron, braving the rocky desert to round up
missing dinosaurs, and searching for the cure
for a powerful curse.
A lot can happen in ive years, though. When
the diamonds dried up and magic revealed little
else of easily accessible value, the dwarven
prospectors left, the mages packed up their
wands, and the gamblers and drunks hopped
the train to the next boom town. In the space of
a year, Diamond Gulch went from bustling to
near-abandoned.
During the course of the adventure, they'll be
traveling between Diamond Gulch and Silver
City, negotiating with powerful PCs, working
with and against agents of the law, and ighting
off hungry dinosaurs.
Now the town is simply a waypoint on the line
between Wyvern Canyon and Silver City, and
would be all but forgotten if it weren't for one
very peculiar feature.
The adventure ends after each of the major
obstacles has been resolved: the missing
dinosaurs have been recovered, the curse has

been removed, and the power-mad rail baron
has been defeated. Success means insuring the
continued existence of the town of Diamond
Gulch.
an attempt to compete with the dwarven
prospectors, one enterprising group of human
miners bought magical tattoos from a traveling
mage that were supposed to "attune" them to
the dark. Unfortunately, the mage sold them a
batch of cursed tattoos, and led the town with
their money. While they could now see in the
dark, sunlight began to cause them damage
(1d6/round when exposed to direct sunlight).
They are trapped in the mines, and the negative
energy that powers their tattoos is slowly
turning them into creatures of the night.
Adventure Hooks
The PCs can become involved in a number of
ways:
Reward!
Even though the number of triceratops being
raised in this area has diminished signiicantly
in recent times, dino-rustling is still a hangin'
crime. Virgil Clanton, the town's mayor, has
posted a reward for any group willing to stop
the rustlers (see Players' Handout One:
Reward Poster ). The reward isn't big, since
the town is nearly broke, so, to sweeten the
deal, Virgil has seen it to offer partial mineral
rites to the deep roots of the mines, which are
set to be breached within a few weeks. To ind
out about the reward, the PCs will have to be
within any of the towns a few days train ride
from Diamond Gulch.
Over the past year, they have lost the need
to eat or sleep, and they work tirelessly, day
and night. At irst, the miners were thankful,
since they could produce a lot of coal, and
therefore make a lot of money, but lately, they
have started suffering from the strange craving
for human lesh. Ike, the leader of the miners,
has sent a letter to his sister Ida (see Players'
Handout Two: Ike's Letter ), asking her to
help.
Ida may know of the PCs, or she may simply
be riding on the same train as they. If so,
she may ill them in on the background and
implore them to help. If the PCs have a priest
or necromancer among them, they may be
answering the miners' call.
The PCs may be in transit on one of the Silver
steam trains, heading toward Silver City.
Shortly after passing Diamond Gulch, they'll
encounter the Gulch Dino-Express stopped
on the tracks. Curious PCs may decide to
investigate, and, upon doing so, will ind that
one of the triceratops has suffered a foot injury.
Bill Bluehat, the train's engineer, is trying to
calm the injured beast, but has no way to get
the train moving again in the near future. If the
PCs offer to help (via healing magic or other
means), he will inform them of the missing
dinos, and ask for their assistance. He's
desperate to recover them and will ill the PCs
in on the reward offered for the capture of the
rustlers.
Major NPCs
Grumbeard Silvertongue (LE male dwarf
expert 8) is the founder of Silver City and the
Silver Railway Company. He is an ambitious
and greedy man, who will stop at nothing to
complete his domination of the railways. He's
used forced labor, extortion, blackmail, and
even murder to expand his rail empire, and he's
not about to let a dinosaur-powered train get in
his way.
Grumbeard is thin for a dwarf, bald, and
normally wears a three piece suit. He's gruff,
rude, and abrupt – always attempting to impose
