40V DC to 60V DC input for datacom
applications or a 36V DC to 75V DC input for
telecom applications. The NEB 1/8-brick series is
offered with power ratings ranging from 264W to
300W, while the NQB -brick series is available
in 420W to 468W configurations.
The default output voltage for all models is
preset at 12V DC. In addition, the
NEB-D
and
NQB-D
digital-interface variants provide the
flexibility to adjust the output voltage
dynamically via PMBus for dynamic bus
applications. The NEB-D output voltage
can be adjusted from 6.9V DC to
13.2V DC, while the NQB-
D allows adjustment from
4.0V DC to 13.2V DC. For
higher power requirements,
optional droop load sharing
is offered in both series.
Additional features include insulation meeting
EN 60950 standards, 2250V DC isolation voltage,
and remote sensing. To address high-temperature
applications, both series offer an optional
baseplate for improved thermal performance. The
converters are pin and function compatible with
the Ericsson power modules BMR456 and
BMR457 series based on the FRIDA II platform.

Microchip speeds-up embedded GUI
development
Microchip has released Graphics Display Designer X (GDD
X), a visual design tool that accelerates completion of
Graphical User Interface (GUI) screens for applications using
Microchip’s 16- or 32-bit PIC
MCUs. To streamline the
GUI-design process, GDD X provides a WYSIWYG
environment, and saves valuable design time by
automatically generating the C code needed for the user
interface.
GDD X enables development using Microchip’s Graphics
Library. It can be used as a stand-alone tool or as a plug-in
to Microchip’s free MPLAB
X Integrated Development
Environment (IDE), and is available to run on Windows
,
Linux or Mac OS
operating systems.
NQB and NEB smart converters are available in 1/4-brick or
1/8th-brick form factors

NEB series
advanced bus
converters achieve typical efficiency as high as
96.4% and are able to optimise efficiency from
20% to 100% of full load. This makes them ideal
for use in applications where loading conditions
can vary greatly. In addition, the firmware is
designed to handle input-voltage transients with
slew rates of up to 0.5V/s, while keeping the
output voltage within 10% and preventing
unwanted triggering of over-voltage protection.
The NQB series is housed in a -brick
57.9mm x 36.8mm x 11.3mm package, and the
NEB series is housed in a 1/8-brick package
measuring 58.4mm x 22.7mm x 10.2mm. Two
versions are available in each series. The NQB-D
and NEB-D variants feature a PMBus 1.2 digital
interface, while the NQB-N and NEB-N series are
offered without digital-communication pins for
conventional IBC requirements.
The PMBus interface allows designers to
configure and store parameters in the device’s
on-chip USER_STORE memory block.
Configurable parameters include output voltage,
voltage margining, fault management, precision
delay ramp-up, and start/stop, as well as settings
for features such as over-temperature, over-
current, and over-voltage protection.
Further options available include two input-voltage
range configurations, providing the choice of a

and a hardware-based Capacitive Voltage Divider (CVD).
The hardware CVD enables a more efficient
implementation of capacitive sensing for touch applications.
As a core-independent peripheral, it implements control
logic that enables automated sampling that effectively
reduces software size and minimises CPU usage. It also
provides automatic control of guard-ring drive and a
programmable sample-and-hold capacitance, to better
match larger touch or proximity sensors.

Rugged high-commutation triac operates
at high voltage and temperature
The high repetitive peak off-state voltage of
800V and maximum off-state voltage slope of
1800V/s ensure high static stability with
immunity to false turn-on by dV/dt. A high
maximum on-state current slope of 100A/s
enhances resistance to fast current transients.
By also allowing a high commutating-current
slope of up to 25A/ms, as well as a high
commutating voltage, the BTA420-800BT
delivers superior commutation capability. The
gate-trigger current of 50mA and optimised
gate sensitivity ensure high noise immunity.

The BTA420-800BT combines three-
quadrant operation for improved noise
immunity, planar-passivated technology
for ruggedness and reliability over a wide
operating-voltage range, and high
commutation capability at high operating
temperatures. It will commutate the full
RMS current of 20A at the maximum

without the aid of a snubber. This helps

Dedicated motor controller cuts system development
time and software demands
The IC features an Advanced Motor
Controller (AMC), comprising a configurable
processing core and peripheral circuits
specifically designed for motor control. The
AMC processes the tasks dedicated for
motor controls, such as the FOC and
‘Sensorless’ motor-control algorithms, PWM
controls, current sensing, real-time over-
current protection, and motor-angle
calculations. The AMC also supports
programmable deadtime and current-leading
phase control.
The embedded microcontroller core
provides motor-control commands to the
AMC through a communication interface.
System-control, user-interface,
communication-interface, and input/output-
interface functions are also programmed
through this core for different motor
applications. The two processors work
independently and complement each other.
The FCM8531 also integrates a power-
management unit and clock generator to
control low-power modes and housekeeping
functions, a protection block implementing
short-circuit and open-circuit protection, a
10-bit ADC with multiplexer and an 8-bit DAC.

Gate-drive optocoupler protects IGBTs to enhance

Fairchild Semiconductor’s
FOD8318
is
an advanced optocoupler for IGBT or
MOSFET gate-drive applications, with
2.5A output-current capability enabling
fast switching of most IGBTs rated up
to 1200V/150A.
Integrated features of the FOD8318
include CMOS transistors of 1 typical
on-state resistance capable of driving
the IGBT from rail to rail, and high-speed
isolated feedback circuitry for fault
sensing.
IGBT-protection features are also built
in, including an active Miller-clamp
function to shut off the IGBT during large
over-voltage spikes without the need for
a negative supply voltage. Desaturation
detection is also provided, which
protects the IGBT at short-circuit by
monitoring its collector-emitter voltage.
When the voltage at the detection pin
increases above the threshold voltage,
the driver output stage executes a soft

register polarity. The PCA9538PW/Q900 is
similar to the PCA9554 but does not have an
internal I/O pull-up resistor, thereby
reducing power consumption when

address range.
