Chapter One
He could see that nothing had changed. Even in the fading evening sun, Saint Amour
looked like the picture postcard of a small seaside town. The wooden houses with their
slatted shutters were gently weathered, their soft colors blending in with the golden colors of
autumn. They would be painted in the summer, a yearly ritual that kept the worst of wear at
bay. Carefully planted flowers would bloom to add happy colors to the sandy soil, and the
water would be dotted with white sails. Tourists would stream in to enjoy the quaint stores
along the boardwalk, rent houses along the beach front, charter boats for fishing, and boost
the local economy. Andy supposed it had worked that way, and had worked well, since the
local factories had closed down nearly seventy years before. But it was what was underneath
the sheen of sleepy-town America that had driven him away…and was pulling him back
now.
Five years wasn’t so long, really, but it felt like a lifetime for him. He’d had no
intention of ever coming back the night he’d left Saint Amour; after all, there hadn’t been
anything to hold him here. He’d hoped there would be; at one time, he was sure that there
had been. But that reason had died not long before he’d been forced to leave. And yet, he
