Ayakashi 09: Terms and History
As the show takes place during the Edo period, some terms are fairly hard to equate to modern terms. This .pdf serves as a
guide for these terms, as well as to provide some background information regarding certain aspects of the show.
Shoji
A Shoji is a sliding door made of paper.
LAWD DAT BE A MERCHANT WITH A KATANA?
During the Edo period, only Samurai were allowed to carry a Katana. That is why everyone freaks out over the Medicine
Seller carrying one. Merchants were only allowed to carry a short sword or dagger for personal protection.
The Makoto and the Kotowari
Makoto and Kotowari have this huge explanation to go along with them so instead of translating them nicely into english
words or phrases, we decided to bury you in text explaining the two concepts.
San Himitsu
The exorcism method that the Medicine Seller uses is based off the Mikkyo Buddhism concept of San Himitsu (
三秘密
),
which translates to “The Three Secrets”. It is usually abbreviated to Sammitsu (
三密
)
The 3 secrets are:
Jumon (
呪文
), the secret of words. It refers to words that contain power. The words are used in the various incantations.
Nenriki (
意念
), the secret of contemplation. It refers to the visualization of the various magical symbols.
Inzou (
手印
), the secret of movement. It refers to the various hand gestures.
Originally, Sammitsu was used as a tool to seek the way towards Enlightenment, but some Mikkyo Buddism groups used
Sammitsu for mystical purposes such as exorcism and healing.
One of the more well known applications of Sammitsu is recriting “Kuji (
九字
) Rin(
臨
) Pyo(
兵
) To(
闘
) Sha(
者
) Kai(
皆
) Jin
(
陣
) Retsu(
列
) Zai(
在
) Zen(
前
)” along with paper charms and hand gestures for exorcism.
Katachi, Makoto and Kotowari
In the anime, the Medicine Seller states that the condition to unsheathe the sword is that the Katachi(
形
), Makoto(
眞
), and
Kotowari (
理
) must be known. The concept has it roots in Mikkyo Buddhism, which believes that demons takes form based
on the evil of the human heart.
Katachi, which literally translates to shape, refers to the form that a demon takes.
Makoto, which literally translates to truth, refers to what is really going on.
Kotowari, which literally translate to reason, refers to the circumstances/incident that made the demon act that way.
