Howdy y’all! You’ll hear that expression a lot no matter what part of the state
you visit. That’s because Texans are friendly; in fact, the word Texas comes
from a Native American word, tejas , which means “friend.”
Friendly folks aren’t all you’ll find during your visit. The Lone Star State is filled with so many
wonderful things to see, do and experience that you might be planning your next trip before your
first is even finished. It’s the reason we proudly say, “Texas. It’s like a whole other country.”
You’ll find gorgeous mountains and rugged desert, water-carved canyons and rich farmland,
wetlands and forests, rolling hills, breathtaking views and hundreds of miles of sandy beaches.

There’s an adventure around every corner. Explore the outdoors, surf the Gulf of Mexico,

To make it easier to discover the state, we’ve divided the Guide into seven regions :
Panhandle Plains , Prairies and Lakes , Piney Woods, Gulf Coast , South
Texas Plains , Hill Country and Big Bend Country . The cities and towns in each
respective region are listed alphabetically. Each city’s “Map” code shows
grid coordinates corresponding to its location on the Texas Official Travel Map.
At the beginning of each regional section, you’ll find a detailed map as
well as an overview describing each region. Following the regional sections,
you’ll find lists of lakes and state parks in Texas, as well as national parks and forests.
We’ve included listings for chambers of commerce and convention and visitor bureaus that
contain addresses, phone numbers and websites for more information.
Highway designations in the book include I- for interstate highways, U.S. for U.S. highways,
Texas for state highways, and F.M. and R.M. for Texas Farm-to-Market or Ranch-to-Market roads.
Remember, Texas is a very big state with lots of roadways.
Use this guide to help discover the wondrous treasures that Texas has to offer.
