Judit Polgar
The games of Judit Polgar are among the most attractive
in modern chess. Against any opposition she succeeds
in creating tactical complications. See on pages 130-1
how she executes the classic double bishop sacrifice on
h7 and g7 against none other than Anatoly Karpov!
Hungarian trainer Tibor Karolyi reports on the theoretical
implications of this spectacle (RG 6.12).
Luke McShane
The Antoshin Variation (KP 4.4) has revived interest in
the Philidor. Giving up the centre voluntarily and
developing the king's bishop to e7, appears to be
passive but this is an optical illusion. In reality, Black
prepares the central push d6-d5. Tibor Fogarasi
explains on page 148 how Luke McShane gained a
useful edge by turning down crazy complications.
Laurent Fressinet
French rising star Laurent Fressinet was proud that 'not
even the computer could find a refutation' of the
sacrifice that knocked out Sergey Tiviakov in Wijk aan
Zee (IG 1.3, page 143). Despite the outcome of the
game the Russian Dutchman was not at all impressed.
He maintains his position that White can retain a small
plus in this opening line.
Alexander Nikitin
After working together with Etienne Bacrot for several
years Alexander Nikitin is back among the ranks of
Yearbook contributors. He marks his return with an
authorative survey of a highly topical line of the
Sicilian Sveshnikov (SI 38.8, page 54), featuring
two games against Peter Leko annotated by
Vladimir Kramnik - one as Black, one as White.
Lazaro Bruzon
In 2000 Lazaro Bruzon sensationally won the World
Junior Championship. Since then the Cuban has raised
his rating over 2600. In January 2004, he qualified for
the 'real thing' by winning the Grandmaster B Group of
the Corus Chess Tournament. Among his wins was a
crushing victoy over Friso Nijboer {OP 7.14}, who
explains what went wrong, on page 212.
Mikhail Rytshagov
His name may not sound familiar to many Yearbook
subscribers but Mikhail Rytshagov has represented
Estonia at four Olympiads and several other team
championships. Still, he is best known as one of
Shirov's loyal seconds. His contribution on a topical line
of the Grunfeld Indian {GI 3.13, page 195} confirms
his status as a fine theoretician.
Magnus Carlsen
Achieving three IGM norms at the tender age of 13
proved a piece of cake for Norwegian super talent
Magnus Carlsen. He began his expedition last January
with a fabulous victory in the Grandmaster C Group in
Wijk aan Zee, where Magnificent Magnus stole the
heats of the Dutch audience. Sipke Ernst, his main
competitor for first prize, fell victim to a string of
sacrifices {CK 12.5, page 120}.
Alexander Raetsky
There is no better excuse for dealing with the Albin
Counter-Gambit than two recent games by Alexander
Morozevich, who played the rare side-line

opposition. Together with his friend Maxim Chetverik,
Alexander Raetsky wrote a monograph about this
opening line, so he's the right man to repot on this
stunning new development.
