the cent€rweb frame. All lbe other pafts
areattachedto it. I builtth€ i(eb ftame by
cuttinstwo longrails (A) and fourstiles (B)
to size,see!'ig. 1. FiNt, cut lhe rails to a
lenrth of48% andthe stilesto a lengthof
r?% . Then Iip all six oftbese pieces to a
commonwidth of 2%'.

To get the measurementsfor the two
panels,dry-assemble
stiles,seeFis. 2. (This shouldleavean 18"
openins between the two inside stiles.)
Then cut 7''' Masonile panels to fit the
groove-to-groove m€asurements rn the
frcm 5A stock (1%,i-thick) sothey're 24'l,"
long and 5'l;' wid€. Then two /"rwide
grooves are routed on the inside fac€of
these capssotheycanb€joinedto theseb
After these panels are cut, glue and
clampthe fram€ tos€ther (sluing the pan-
elsin the frame openings).

Mostofthe time whenwe setoutto builda
pieceof fumilure, we try to build it to a
srandardsize.Tablesanddesks,for exam-
ple, are supposedto be 29" high. But the
problem with standard-sizefurniture is
that p€opledon'i comein standardsizes-
especiallykids.
We wanted to build a desk that would
"gros/ as the pemon $ew. The solution
wasto makethe heightofthe deskadjust
able.To dothis, wedecidedto usea sliding
dovetail joint on the desk'sleg assembly
(shown in tbe deiail photo, belo$ left).
This lay rhe wboledesktopcanbe raised
to suit the perso. using it.
While we we.e at it, we alsodecidedto
make the d€sk top adjustable. That is,
providea say sothe iop couldbe tilted up
for coloring (or draftins woodworkins
plans), but alsoso it couldbe laid flat for
doins homework (or payingbills).
To acconplishthis r€quirement,the top
of the deskis hinsed on a "rachet" fiame
that canbemised in increments (shown i.
the detail photo,belowright).
