In August 2006 we showed
how to make a wall sconce for
a 3” candle. Now that candle
resides in this months luminaria.

Luminarias are small lanterns used
mostly for decorative purposes.
Their origin can be traced to
Mexico where they are used during
Christmas time. Our forged version
consists of linked segments sus-
pended over an inner frame that
houses a candle. the segments are
forged out of 3 / 16 ” x 1 1 / 4 ” stock and
the frame is fabricated using 1 / 8
flat stock and 1 / 4 ” round stock.
Noteworthy techniques used in this
project are punching holes in thin
stock (p.2746) and making an “X”
joint in round stock (p.2751).

BEGIN BY PLACING FOUR
20” LENGTHS OF 3 / 16 ” x 11 / 4
STOCK IN THE FORGE.
BOTH ENDS WILL BE
FORGED, THEN THE STOCK
CUT IN HALF TO MAKE
EIGHT PARTS.
FORGE A TAPER ON EACH
BAR, ROTATING THE STOCK IN
THE FORGE UNTIL COMPLETE.
IT SHOULD TAKE THREE
HEATS PER BAR TO COM-
PLETE THE TASK.
USING THE ROUND FACE OF
A ROUNDING HAMMER,
PINCH OUT A PORTION OF
THE STOCK OVER THE END
OF THE ANVIL HORN.
