As a matter of fact,
L-glutathoine (GSH)
has been called a triple threat anti-aging amino acid.
It’s actually a tripeptide, synthesized from three amino acids – L-cysteine, L-glutamic acid, and
glycine, and it has been shown to act as an antioxidant and deactivate free radicals which speed
up the aging process. It is also an anti-tumor agent, a respiratory accelerator in the brain, and
has been used to help in the treatment of allergies, cataracts, diabetes, hypoglycemia, and
arthritis, as well as helping to prevent harmful side effects of high-dose radiation in chemotherapy
and X-rays. Additionally, it helps protect against the harmful effects of cigarette smoke and
alcohol.

Alanine:
Enhances immune system; lowers risk of kidney stone; aids in alleviating
hypoglycemia.
Aspartic Acid:
Enhances immune system; increases stamina and endurance; expels harmful

*Page 144 – Are there any new “wonder workers” available as supplements that haven’t been
publicized?
Yes, there are. And my pick for the most impressive among them is
shark cartilage
. It’s now
available as a food supplement in powdered capsules and oils, and aside from exhibiting no
adverse side effects, it’s been found to boost the immune system (and is currently being
investigated as a preventive for AIDS). It’s also been shown to provide immunity to carcinogens,
help prevent osteoarthritis, inflammation, scleroderma-and last, but far from least, this anti-tumor
substance has also been found to enhance sexuality!
*Page 145 – I’ve been told about an algae (not spirulina) that’s supposed to have amazing health
and healing properties. Have you heard of it and can you tell me what it is?
I have, and it’s “chlorella.”
Chlorella
(the emerald algae) has been touted as the perfect whole
food. Aside from being a complete protein and containing all the B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E
and the major minerals (with zinc and iron in amounts large enough to be considered
supplementary), it has been found to improve the immune system, improve digestion, detoxify the
body, accelerate healing, protect against radiation, aid in prevention of degenerative diseases,
help in treatment of
candida albicans
, relieve arthritis pain, and because of its nutritional content,
aid in the success of numerous weight loss programs.
It is available in tablets, powder and water soluble extracts (which contain the highest
concentrations of Chlorella Growth Factor [CGF]). Be aware, though, that although chlorella
products are widely available, they differ depending on the particular strain of chlorella used.
The average dosage is: 5-8 tablets 3 times daily. I’d suggest starting with only 1 tablet 3 times
daily and working up, just to make sure you have no allergic reactions. Possible adverse
reactions include: gas, bloating, bowel irregularity, nausea, green stools and mild skin breakouts
of eczema. (These reactions, unless severe, are not unusual and should clear up in a few days.
If not, discontinue supplementation and consult a nutritionally oriented doctor. See section 293.)
Dr. David Steenblock, author of
Chlorella, Natural Medicinal Algae
, has found that for
detoxification purposes, chlorella is best taken on an empty stomach; however, because it is a
food, it can be taken with other foods as well as medications.

111. Astragalus
This herb has been found to alleviate fatigue and lessen the frequency of colds. It’s an
immune system booster that improves resistance to viruses and bacterial infections and also
accelerates healing. It works best with zinc and vitamins A and C.

Coenzyme Q-10
, a substance that can be synthesized by the body (although is also obtained
from food) is used by our cells during the process of respiration, and deficiencies are common in
the course of normal aging. In fact, studies have shown that reduced levels of Coenzyme Q-10
may directly contribute to aging and that increasing levels retard the process as well as:
•
Reduces the risk of heart attack (aids respiration of the heart muscle; appears to provide
a protective effect against viral caused heart inflammation; helps prevent cardiac
arrhythmias).
•
Stimulates the immune system.
•
Aids in the treatment of periodontal disease.
•
Lowers blood pressure.
•
Shares many of vitamin E’s antioxidant properties
•
Aids in the prevention of toxicity from drugs used to treat many diseases associated with
aging.
As a supplement, the recommended dosage is 10 mg. three times daily.
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), a natural hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands, and
has been used in anti-aging regimens, since one of its properties is that it can “de-excite” the
body’s processes and thereby slow down the production of fats, hormones, and acids that
contribute to aging, is no longer available as a supplement. It has been found to also contain
anti-cancer and weight loss properties and is currently being formulated as a prescription drug.

know exactly what it is, or if it’s something I should be taking at age of 72?
If you start now, there’s a good chance you’ll still be taking it at 102!
Propolis
is a resin-like
material, found in leaf buds and the bark of many common trees, that is collected by bees, who
use their enzymes to convert it into pollen. Aside from antibiotics, propolis has been shown to
give athletes increased staying power. It can also stimulate the thymus gland, enhance the
body’s immune system, and be used externally to heal bruises and blemishes.
As a supplement, it’s available in tablet, granule, and tincture form. (There are also creams for
external use.) It works best when taken in conjunction with vitamin C and zinc.

26. Vitamin A
Facts
:
Vitamin A is fat soluble. It requires fats as well as minerals to be properly absorbed by your
digestive track.
It can be stored in your body and need not be replenished every day.
It occurs in two forms – performed vitamin A, called retinol (found only in foods of animal
origin), and pro-vitamin A known as
carotene
(provided by foods of both plant and animal
origin).
Vitamin A is measured in USP Units (United States Pharmocopea), IU (International Units),
and – most recently – RE (Retinol Equivalents). (See section 132.)
1,000RE (or 5,000 IU) is the recommended daily dosage for adult males to prevent
deficiency. For females it’s 800 RE (4,000 IU). During pregnancy the new RDAs do not
recommend an increase, but for nursing mothers an additional 500 RE is suggested for the
first six months and an additional 400 RE for the second six months.
NOTE: Throughout this book, beta-carotene will be the preferred form of vitamin A. I find it
preferable because it does not have the same toxicity potential of vitamin A. Moreover, it has
been shown to be a preventive for certain types of cancer, helpful in lowering levels of
harmful cholesterol (see section 89) and a significant factor in reducing the risk of heart
disease.
What It Can Do For You:
•
Counteract night blindness, weak eyesight, and aid in the treatment of many eye
disorders. (It permits formation of visual purple in the eye.)
•
Builds resistance to respiratory infections.
•
Aids in proper function of the immune system.
•
Shorten the duration of diseases.
•
Keep the outer layers of your tissues and organs healthy.
•
Help in the removal of age spots
•
Promote growth, strong bones, healthy skin, hair, teeth, and gums.
•
Help treat acne, superficial wrinkles, impetigo, boils, carbuncles, and open ulcers
when applied externally.
•
Aid in the treatment of emphysema and hyperthyroidism.
Deficiency Disease
:
Xerophthalmia, night blindness. (For deficiency symptoms, see section 127.) Deficiency often
occurs as a result of chronic fat malabsorption. It’s most commonly found in children under five
years, usually because of insufficient dietary intake.
Best Natural Source:
Fish liver oil, liver, carrots, dark green and yellow vegetables, eggs, milk and dairy products,
margarine, and yellow fruits. (Note: the color intensity of a fruit or vegetable is not necessarily a
reliable indicator of its pro-vitamin A content.)
Supplements
:
Usually in two forms, one derived from natural fish liver oil and the other water dispersible.
Water-dispersible supplements are either acetate or palmitate and recommended for anyone
intolerant to oil, particularly acne sufferers. 5,000 to 10,000 IU are the most common daily doses.
Vitamin A acid (retin A), which has often been used in the treatment of acne, and is now being
marketed as a treatment for eradicating superficial wrinkles, is available only by prescription.
Toxicity:
More than 50,000 IU daily, if taken for many months, can produce toxic effects in adults.
More than 18,500 IU daily can produce toxic effects in infants.
Toxicity symptoms include hair loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, scaly skin, blurred vision,
rashes, bone pain, irregular menses, fatigue, headaches, and liver enlargement. (See section
290, “Cautions.”)
Enemies:
Polyunsaturated fatty acids with carotene work against vitamin A unless there are antioxidants
present. (See section 49 for antioxicants, and section 250 for drugs that deplete vitamins.)
Personal Advice
:
You need at least 10,000 IU vitamin A if you take more than 400 IU vitamin E daily.
If you are on the pill, your need for A is decreased.
If your weekly diet includes ample amounts of liver, carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, or
cantaloupe, it’s unlikely you need an A supplement.
Vitamin A should not be taken with mineral oil.
Vitamin A works best with B complex, vitamin D, vitamin E, calcium, phosphorus, and zinc. (Zinc
is what’s needed by the liver to get vitamin A out of its storage deposits.)
Vitamin A also helps vitamin C from oxidizing.
Don’t supplement your dog’s or cat’s diet with vitamin A unless a vet specifically advises it.
If you are on a cholesterol-reducing drug such as Questran (
cholestryramine
), you’ll have
decreased vitamin A absorption and probably need a supplement.
