Starting Chain: Leaving a 6" length at the beginning for fringe, with color A, chain 203 (or 269).
Row 1: Working in the back loop only of each chain, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea ch across. (202 sc or 268 sc) Leaving a 6" length at the end for fringe, end off. The remaining loops will be used later when making the second part of the scarf.
Row 2: Leaving a 6" length at the beginning for fringe, attach color B in first stitch of row 1. ch 1, sc in ea sc across. (202 sc or 268 sc) Leaving a 6" length at the end for fringe, end off.
Row 3: Leaving a 6" length at the beginning for fringe, attach color C in first stitch of previous row. ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in ea of next 2 sc, * ch 1, skip next sc, dc ea of next 2 sc **, repeat the directions between * and ** across the row (as many times as needed) until only 1 sc remains, then dc in last sc. Leaving a 6" length at the end for fringe, end off.
Row 4: Leaving a 6" length at the beginning for fringe, attach color B in the top loop of the ch-3 that started the previous row, ch 1, sc in top loop of the same ch-3, (sc in ea of next 2 dc, keeping the ch-1 behind the tr that you are making: tr in sc two rows below), repeat the directions between ( and ) across the row (as many times as needed) until only 3 dc remain, then sc in ea of the last 3 dc. Leaving a 6" length at the end for fringe, end off.
Row 5: Leaving a 6" length at the beginning for fringe, attach color A in first stitch of previous row. ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ea sc and in ea tr across the row. Leaving a 6" length at the end for fringe, end off.
Row 6: Leaving a 6" length at the beginning for fringe, attach color C in first stitch of previous row. ch 1, sc in ea of first 3 sc, (long sc in tr two rows below, sc in ea of next 2 sc), repeat the directions between ( and ) across the row (as many times as needed) until only 1 sc remains, then sc in last sc. Leaving a 6" length at the end for fringe, end off. Photos showing how to do a long sc can be seen at:http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa042598.htm
Row 7: Leaving a 6" length at the beginning for fringe, attach color A in first stitch of previous row. ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ea sc across the row. Leaving a 6" length at the end for fringe, end off.
Row 8: Repeat row 6.
Second part of scarf: Turn the piece so that the starting chain remaining loops are at the top, ready to be worked in next. The right side of the scarf should still be facing you (on the right side, you can see the treble stitches but the whole trebles do not show on the wrong side). Repeat Rows 2 - 8 to complete the second part of the scarf. Note that when you are doing Row 2 for this second part of the scarf, you will be making the stitches for that row in the remaining loops of the starting chain.
Finishing Touch: If desired, slip stitch in ea sc along each long edge (using the same color yarn as used in the edge rows).
Adding Extra Fringe: If you want a fringe length as shown in my photo examples: Cut 12" lengths in colors to correspond with the colors of the rows to which you are adding extra fringe. To attach fringe, fold one length in half, then use your crochet hook to pull the yarn (at the fold) through one stitch at one end of the scarf (pulling it through only about one-half inch or so). Next, pull the rest of the fringe length through the loop that you just pulled through the scarf. With your fingers, tug down on the fringe to tighten it against the scarf.
